Winning Monaco, it’s a dream come true as a driver - Sergio Perez

The F1 Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most anticipated races on the Formula One calendar, with some of the biggest names from the world of sport descending on the streets of Monaco.

One driver in particular had a lot of buzz around him in the build-up to the weekend, Charles LeClerc was back at his home Grand Prix with hopes of becoming the first Monégasque to win the infamous race. But following an unfortunate qualifying incident where he received a penalty for impeding McLaren’s Lando Norris he moved from P3 to P6 on the starting grid.

For the front runners though qualifying came down to final seconds with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen grabbing pole right at the end, taking it from Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso by just 0.084s. A bitter-sweet qualifying for Red Bull as Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez crashed out in Q1

All eyes were on the front row of the grid at lights out to see whether Alonso or Verstappen would get the better start. Ultimately the Red Bull driver on the softer tyres led the way maintaining his advantage over Alonso, Esteban Ocon kept his spot in third place with the challenge of fighting off Sainz and Hamilton behind him.

After a sunny weekend in Monaco the rain fell just as the drivers planned their one and only pit stops of the race. Turning the Grand Prix on its head, with some parts of the track still dry, teams had to mix up the strategy, most pitted for intermediates with Kevin Magnussen staying out on slicks for as long as possible. After the shower cleared the race leaders found their pace again with Verstappen, Alonso and Ocon back in the top 3 at the end of the race. Verstappen earned Red Bull their third consecutive win here, Alonso’s second place finish is his best since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix and Ocon’s third place makes his third F1 career podium.
